You've invested in a great perfume – but it only lasts a couple of hours? Chances are it's about how you apply it, not the quality of the perfume. Here are the tricks that actually make a difference.
Apply on pulse points
Pulse points are the spots where blood pulses closest to the skin and heat is at its highest. That warmth helps the perfume "bloom" and project outward. The most important ones are:
- The hollow of the neck
- Inside the wrists
- Behind the ears
- Inside the elbows
- Behind the knees (yes – scent rises upward!)
Never rub – spray and let dry
The most common mistake: you spray on your wrists and rub them together. It feels natural but actually breaks down the top notes faster and shortens longevity. Spray and let the air do the rest.
Apply on moisturised skin
Perfume sticks better and lasts longer on moisturised skin. Apply right after showering, ideally on skin you've treated with an unscented body lotion. The skin is moist, pores are open and absorb the scent more deeply.
Hold the right distance
Hold the bottle 15–20 cm from your skin when spraying. Too close creates a concentrated "patch", too far away spreads the perfume into the air before it reaches your skin.
How much perfume should you use?
With an EDP, 2–4 sprays is enough. More is rarely better – a well-balanced EDP like our Those Summer Nights or Fading Sun is designed to project beautifully without being overwhelming.
Remember: you get used to your own scent quickly (called "nose fatigue"), but that doesn't mean others can't smell it. Try asking someone around you how much they can detect the fragrance.
Store your perfume correctly
Incorrect storage is a common reason perfumes change or lose their strength:
- Avoid direct sunlight – UV light breaks down the perfume oil.
- Avoid the bathroom – humidity and temperature fluctuations are the enemy of perfume.
- Store cool and dark – a dresser drawer or wardrobe is perfect.
Layer by layer – scent layering
Want the fragrance to really stick? Try using an unscented body lotion on your skin before spraying. Fat molecules bind perfume oil and give a longer-lasting result – perfect for special occasions when you want the scent to stay all evening.
Try and get to know your perfume
All fragrances are unique and sit differently depending on skin chemistry, diet and climate. The best way to learn how your perfume behaves is to test properly. Our Mirisanno Sample Kit is perfect for this – you can test each fragrance for a full day and see how it develops on your specific skin.
